Automotive HMI Application Design (Desktop)

I had a great opportunity to switch carers for a bit and enter the world of UX/UI design under the guidance of Randall Tyner. He recruited me to work on the development of a new desktop application for the Automotive Human Machine Interface industry. If you’ve ever bought a brand new car and wondered why the touchscreen interface looked like it was designed 2–3 years prior, that’s because it probably was. NNG saw an opportunity to expedite the HMI development process and that’s exactly what we were working on. The images above show a small fraction of that work in process.

ANCHOR HOCKING /
GLASSWARE + TRUESEAL

Package Design

In the midst of a brand refresh, Anchor Hocking was looking for ideas on how to elevate their on-shelf presence with a packaging update. These concepts not only highlight the features & benefits of the glassware, but they also tell a story of the possible contents/ingredients in a unique way that inspires. The aim was to bring a more human approach to selling glass, that on its own, isn't very exciting—so we gave the copy a little tongue-in-cheek sense of humour to bring out a bit more youth and personality.

MORPHEUS 360 /
EARBUDS + HEADPHONES

Package + Logo Design

Package design holds the highest stakes for a first impression—your product must stand out amongst a crowd of ever-growing competition vying for attention. This packaging aims to capture a buyer’s attention with an exploded product visual, provide a quick read, and inform without clutter while hitting on all the key features and benefits and appeal to a demographic with high-end preferences.

ANCHOR HOCKING /
SHIPPING BOX EXPERIENCE

Package Design

Anchor Hocking was looking to update their shipping boxes from the standard-issue cardboard. In an effort to bring a little more joy to receiving a package from Anchor Hocking, I created this design with a two-colour print, branded packaging tape, and a decorative sleeve that includes a pull-tab to bring a bit more delight to the everyday.

BPP /
REALTOR TEAM

Branding

Blackton Property Partners is the husband/wife Realtor team of Joe and Lindsay Blackton. After a successful 8-year real estate career in upstate VA, they moved down to Greenville, SC to continue that success and founded Jackson Stanley Realtors where they have continued to grow over the last 5 years. I was excited to work with Joe on designing their team logo.

VIDEO LARYNGOSCOPE /
MEDICAL PROTOTYPE

Industrial Design

I wanted to create a product that had the potential to save lives, but also improve upon what was already on the market. In an effort to expand my portfolio I challenged myself to a two-week mini-project that would directly relate to my application for a master’s in advanced product design. Excited at the opportunity ahead I immediately spoke with my friend John in emergency medical services (EMS), posing the question; "What is the highest priority in pre-hospital care as a paramedic?". He promptly replied "airway management" and I had my project. After several meetings with John and a medical engineer we quickly realized the need for an improved video laryngoscope—an essential tool in oral intubation: the placement of a tube into the windpipe in order to maintain an open airway in patients who are unconscious or unable to breathe on their own.

MARKET LANE PIZZERIA /
COMMUNITY DINING

Logo / Brand / Menu Design

Market Lane Pizzeria was the only restaurant in Toronto that I could have eaten eat at every night. I may be a little bias though as my sister and I had such a big part in its development. We were asked to lead the interior design and branding, respectively, from its inception. As is the tradition in Italy, dinner is not just a meal to be prepared, but a gathering of friends & family—a community coming together to socialize and laugh. This is where the idea for the birds on a wire came in. Market Lane is a gathering place for the locals—a place to enjoy the best of Italy, away from home.

UPTOWN HOUSTON /
STREET LAMP FIXTURE

Industrial Lighting Design

When I was at CommArts I had the opportunity to work with Mike Doyle on a street lamp fixture & pole for the prestigious Uptown Houston urban center. The client had already purchased a large number of stock CAMPO luminaries and requested that we build the custom design around them. After 30-40 revisions, three shown below, we came up with a solution for the reflector that the manufacturer initially didn’t know how to build. The drawings on the following pages helped them realize a solution of heating and draping acrylic over a mould to create the dynamic form while still being structurally sound.

ERECTÖR /
PATIO SET

Furniture Design

I’ve always been fascinated by the success of IKEA. I think when you assemble your own furniture there’s a greater sense of pride/ownership, well, until it falls apart. This "ERECTÖR" patio set is my tribute to IKEA. I think it looks like something you could buy there. The design was entirely conceived and built in SketchUp; it’s quite a different way of working than sketching on paper.

BMW M3 /
RACE CAR WRAP

Livery Design

Racing my own car has always been a passion of mine—so when I was asked to design a new livery for this GTS3 race car I jumped at the chance! Zung and I go back about 7 years to Pueblo Motorsport Park where I first started with NASA (National Auto Sport Association). He took me under his wing back then and now I finally got to return the favour—and a meaningful one at that. This is the third livery I've designed and I hope I get to do more.

GDS MOLD & TOOL /
FAMILY BUSINESS

Logo + Graphic Design

Gaetano De Siato & Sons is not just a family business, it's years of dedication that built something bigger than the sum of its parts. With 30+ years of mould and tooling experience between them, I wanted to honour their hard work and share their family values.
